The term “4/20” has become synonymous with cannabis culture and is celebrated by marijuana enthusiasts worldwide. Its history dates back to the early 1970s in San Rafael, California, and has evolved into an annual event celebrating marijuana and advocating its legalization.
The origin of 4/20 can be traced back to a group of high school friends known as the “Waldos,” who attended San Rafael High School. In the fall of 1971, the Waldos learned of a Coast Guard member who had planted a cannabis crop but could no longer tend to it. The Waldos were given a treasure map of the supposed location of the hidden marijuana plants. They agreed to meet after school at 4:20 pm to embark on their search, using the code “4:20 Louis” to signify their plan.
Although the Waldos never found the elusive crop, they continued to use “4:20” as a code for smoking marijuana. One of the Waldos, Dave Reddix, later became a roadie for the Grateful Dead, and it’s believed that the band helped popularize the term within the counterculture movement.
The term “4/20” gained further traction in the early 1990s when Steven Hager, editor of High Times magazine, published a story on the Waldos and their adventures—High Times played a significant role in propagating the 4/20 term and concept, associating it with marijuana culture.
Over time, April 20th became an unofficial holiday for cannabis enthusiasts to gather, smoke marijuana, and advocate for its legalization. The event has grown in scale and scope, with large gatherings in cities worldwide, including San Francisco, Vancouver, and Amsterdam. In recent years, as marijuana has become legalized for medical and recreational use in various places, the 4/20 celebrations have become a mix of protest, advocacy, and celebration of cannabis culture.
In summary, 4/20’s history began with a group of friends searching for hidden marijuana plants in the 1970s and has since grown into a worldwide phenomenon celebrating cannabis and advocating for its legalization.
